AHNIM STUDIO | News analysis | October 23, 2026 (KST)
Nasdaq: LRCX. Results released October 21, 2026, for the fiscal first quarter ended September 27. Source review: October 22 US regular session. All financial amounts are USD.
Lam Research’s record September quarter strengthens the case for semiconductor equipment demand, but it does not establish that demand can become revenue on investors’ preferred timetable. Our calculation shows systems supplied 99.1% of the sequential revenue increase. Management’s December revenue midpoint implies only 4.6% further growth, while its presentation flags industry cleanroom and component constraints. The question is whether execution converts the larger opportunity without repeatedly pushing cash generation further out. Results · Company presentation
The incremental dollar came from equipment
| Reported measure | June 28, 2026 quarter | September 27, 2026 quarter |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $6,722.238m | $8,219.418m |
| Systems revenue | $4,249.848m | $5,732.907m |
| Support-related revenue and other | $2,472.390m | $2,486.511m |
| GAAP operating margin | 37.4% | 40.0% |
| Non-GAAP diluted EPS | $1.82 | $2.20 |
Total sales increased 22.3% sequentially. Systems added $1,483.059 million of the $1,497.180 million increase; support-related revenue and other added $14.121 million. Systems grew 34.9%, versus 0.6% for support. These are AHNIM calculations from the exact reported values, rather than an assumption that all business lines accelerated equally.
This distinction matters for earnings durability. New equipment expands the installed base and can create future service opportunities, but the immediate sales increase is exposed to customer installation schedules. Support is also broader than a subscription: the disclosed category contains services, spares, upgrades and Reliant equipment. We would not value the entire category as contracted recurring software revenue.
Against its July 29 outlook, September revenue exceeded the $8.10 billion midpoint by 1.5%, and non-GAAP EPS of $2.20 exceeded the $2.15 midpoint by 2.3%. Both were within the original ranges. This is a company-guidance comparison, not a claim about Wall Street consensus. July results and September outlook
Industry demand and deliverable revenue are different inputs
The official presentation places preliminary calendar 2027 wafer fabrication equipment spending above $200 billion and expects calendar 2026 systems growth well over 40%. Those are company expectations. It also identifies cleanroom availability and certain component supply constraints as limits on the industry’s ability to meet end demand. The slides do not quantify a guaranteed pool of deferred Lam sales. Presentation, slides 5 and 17
For December 27, management guides revenue to $8.6 billion ± $400 million, non-GAAP operating margin to 40.5% ± one percentage point, and diluted EPS to $2.33 ± $0.15. Our arithmetic puts the revenue range at $8.2–$9.0 billion. The low end is slightly below September sales; a strong long-term market forecast therefore does not eliminate near-term quarterly uncertainty.
An illustrative operating sensitivity holds the 40.5% midpoint margin constant: revenue of $8.2/$8.6/$9.0 billion produces $3.321/$3.483/$3.645 billion of operating income. That is a $162 million move per $400 million of revenue. This is our mechanical sensitivity, not management’s correlated low/base/high forecast; actual mix and costs can change the margin too.
For the wider AI supply chain, this separates a capacity bottleneck from a demand cancellation. A delay can preserve customer interest while still reducing near-term earnings and working-capital returns. Our ASML results analysis and Besi delivery-timing analysis examine related equipment-cycle questions; the companies sell different tools, so their growth rates are not interchangeable.
Cash conversion improved, with a working-capital tailwind
Reported operating cash flow of $3,497.652 million less capital expenditures and intangible assets of $257.697 million equals $3,239.955 million under our stated free-cash-flow calculation. Operating asset and liability movements contributed $535.413 million, against an $859.923 million use in June—a $1,395.336 million swing. Removing September’s positive contribution mechanically leaves $2,704.542 million; that is a sensitivity, not normalized FCF. Cash-flow statement
The practical test is repeatability. A cash release from working capital can help finance manufacturing expansion, distributions and repurchases, but it cannot be projected indefinitely. Cash and equivalents of $7,437.384 million exceed the $3,735.444 million combined debt and finance-lease carrying amount by $3,701.940 million. That narrow comparison excludes restricted cash and does not deduct every lease or other liability.
Broker target cuts and our valuation decision
October 22 reporting describes Bernstein’s target cut from $385 to $350 with Outperform retained, BofA’s $385 to $345 with Buy retained, and Needham’s $390 to $290 with Buy retained. Supply constraints and limited near-term upside are central to the reported reassessments. These are secondary reports of broker research; we did not access the original reports. The calculated reductions are 9.1%, 10.4% and 25.6%, respectively. They are changes to price targets, not rating downgrades. A lower target can coexist with a positive rating because a broker can reduce an earnings estimate or valuation multiple while still expecting upside.
AHNIM decision, October 23 KST: valuation under review; no established LRCX Bear/Base/Bull target is being changed. This first news analysis does not invent a stock target from one quarter or adopt a broker average as our own. A comparable, fully reconciled post-results consensus and an AHNIM Base are unavailable, so the 20% divergence test cannot be calculated. The operating sensitivity above is not a share-price valuation.
What would change our assessment
Evidence that deliveries and customer acceptance improve in subsequent quarters would strengthen conversion visibility. Repeated slippage, weaker margins despite higher volume, or inventory and receivables growing faster than sales would weaken it. We also need to distinguish regional mix and export-related constraints from physical production limits before treating either as permanent lost demand. Until then, the September quarter supports the business opportunity more clearly than it settles the timing or price worth paying for it.
