NYSE: IBM. Q3 results released October 21, 2026; quarter and nine months ended September 30. Financial amounts are USD. Constant currency excludes exchange-rate effects and does not mean organic growth.
IBM’s Q3 software rebound improves the recovery case, but its larger operating-cash-flow increase does not translate dollar for dollar into free cash flow. Our reconciliation shows that $2.638 billion of nine-month operating-cash-flow growth became $606 million of IBM-defined FCF growth after financing-receivable adjustments and higher net capital expenditure. The next question is how much software growth persists after delayed deals close. Results and cash reconciliation
Software improved, but the quality of growth matters
IBM’s prepared remarks put Software growth at 9% in constant currency, with organic growth contributing more than four points. Annual recurring revenue reached $24.9 billion, up 8% at constant currency (7% reported). About two-thirds of the large deals delayed from Q2 had closed. Management’s annual Software range moved from 6–8% to 7–8% in constant currency; its revised base case is about 7%. Q3 prepared remarks, pages 7 and 11
Those statements answer different questions. Organic growth helps isolate the existing business; ARR helps assess the scale of recurring revenue, not contracted future sales; closing delayed deals repairs a timing problem. None alone proves a permanent acceleration. In particular, the 9% constant-currency result must not be described as 9% organic growth. Successful recovery of a delayed sale is economically useful, but repeating that catch-up contribution requires another pool of delayed business.
Reuters separately reported BofA’s estimate that about $250 million came from slipped deals, and management’s caution about normalizing transaction-processing growth. That estimate is a broker attribution, not an audited revenue adjustment. We do not subtract it from reported sales to manufacture an alternative organic-growth figure. Reuters, October 22
The commercial path to durable profit is therefore concrete: renew the installed software base, expand customer usage, and deliver new business without relying on quarterly catch-up. Hardware cycles and consulting implementation can support that path, but they can also move on different schedules. Our Pegasystems cloud and contract analysis addresses a related revenue-to-cash question in a different software business; it is an analytical comparison, not a claim that the two companies have the same economics.
Rebuilding the cash-flow bridge
| Nine months ended September 30 | 2026 ($m) | 2025 ($m) | Change ($m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| GAAP operating cash flow | 11,791 | 9,153 | +2,638 |
| Less: financing receivables change | (2,805) | (905) | −1,900 effect |
| Less: net capital expenditure | (1,200) | (1,067) | −133 effect |
| IBM free cash flow | 7,787 | 7,181 | +606 |
The reproducible calculation is 11,791 − 2,805 − 1,200 = 7,786 using the printed component values, while IBM reports 7,787. This $1 million presentation difference is preserved rather than silently changing the company’s FCF. The prior-year bridge is 9,153 − 905 − 1,067 = 7,181. For Q3 alone, 4,025 − 541 − 457 = 3,027. Company reconciliation
Using IBM’s reported FCF totals, nine-month FCF grew 8.4%. Approximately 23.0% of the operating-cash-flow increase survived into that reported FCF increase; the remainder is almost entirely explained by the larger financing-receivable deduction and net capital spending, with the displayed rounding difference noted above. The adjustment removes financing-receivable effects for IBM’s measure. It should not be relabeled as a new cash loss or ignored when comparing with other companies’ definitions.
This is why GAAP cash from operations, IBM-defined FCF and cash remaining for acquisitions or debt reduction belong on separate lines. IBM’s FCF is also not cash after dividends or acquisitions. The release reports $11.4 billion invested in acquisitions year to date. Those investments may improve future growth, but their return must be evaluated after paying for the assets; the acquisition outlay does not disappear because it sits outside FCF.
The outlook upgrade is narrower than a broad growth reset
Management retained full-year consolidated revenue growth of 4–5% in constant currency. Its FCF outlook moved from about $1 billion of year-over-year growth in July to more than $1 billion now; this changes the expected increase, not the total FCF amount. The prior outlook appears in its July 22 prepared remarks. The prepared remarks retain roughly 100 basis points of non-GAAP operating pre-tax margin expansion. The improvement therefore combines a better Software range and stronger cash outlook with an unchanged group revenue range. Prepared remarks, pages 11–12
At September 30 the release reports $63.8 billion of debt, including $12.7 billion of IBM Financing debt, and $11.1 billion of cash, restricted cash and marketable securities. Subtracting financing debt to call the remaining balance the whole company’s net debt would omit financing assets and liabilities that belong together. We would model the operating and financing businesses separately before choosing a valuation multiple or discounting their cash flows.
Analyst targets and our decision
Stock Analysis’s October 22 table shows BMO at $230→$265 with its unchanged rating classified as Hold by the feed, and Goldman Sachs at $270→$300 with Buy maintained. These are reported broker targets from its TipRanks feed, not original research reports. The increases calculate to 15.2% and 11.1%. A reported target increase is not automatically an upgrade in the investment rating. Dated analyst table
The same page gives a 25-analyst S&P Global one-year average of $242.65, median $240 and range $174–$297. We record that snapshot as displayed on October 22, 2026, but its $297 maximum is below the table’s fresh $300 Goldman target. The page says aggregate and individual updates can occur at different speeds. We therefore do not call the aggregate a reconciled post-results consensus or average only the two increases as though they represent the Street.
AHNIM decision, October 23 KST: valuation under review; no existing IBM Bear/Base/Bull target is revised. A full target needs sustainable organic growth, acquisition returns, financing adjustments and diluted shares over a stated forecast period. This news article does not create a new fair value from a broker mean. With no established AHNIM Base and an aggregate timing mismatch, a comparable 20% divergence calculation is unavailable.
The next evidence we need
The recovery strengthens if software renewals and new contracts sustain growth after the delayed deals are exhausted, and if higher operating profit continues to become cash after financing adjustments and investment. It weakens if transaction-processing normalization overwhelms the recurring businesses, acquisitions mask weak existing operations, or stronger headline cash flow again fails to improve cash available after investment. We will judge the next quarter against those conditions, not against a repeat of one unusually favorable catch-up period.
